There are so many fun activities to take part in during the summer. Here are a few ideas that you and your family can try. Some of these activities will also help bring your community closer together.
Host a yard sale
Choose a local charity to donate your earnings to and then let your neighbors know that you are planning a charity yard sale. Don't forget to get the children involved. They can donate their outgrown clothes, toys, and books they no longer use.
Visit a farmer's market or u-pick berry farm
This is a great opportunity to get some fresh tasty fruits, vegetables, and berries. Do you enjoy baking cookies or pies with your children? My boys and I enjoy whipping up pies made with fresh berries and sharing them with our close neighbors. If you are like me and don't like to spend much time baking in a hot kitchen there are many no bake dessert ideas online to try out. They are much less time consuming and just as delicious.
Backyard campout
Pitch a tent, grab some pillows, sleeping bags, or blankets and spend the night relaxing in the fresh night air. For added fun tell some made up stories, roast Marshmallows, or make some delicious smores.
Visit a Seniors home
When I was a teenager, I began volunteering at seniors homes along with a few of my friends. The seniors were always happy to see our smiling faces. I grew up in a small town and volunteering was quite common. It made us feel good to help others who were not able to get out and about so easily. We would help with activities including bingo, musicals, as well as serving meals. Seniors really enjoy having people to talk to and share stories with as well as play games. This is a great opportunity to take your family and share your time with others.
Include your children in the planning and preparation. Stick with simple menu items that they can do themselves or with little supervision. Sandwiches, raw vegetables and dips, fruits, and trail mixes are some ideas. To make it even more fun invite another family to come along.
Sidewalk chalk
Spark creativity and fun in your children by picking up some colorful sidewalk chalk. Have them invite the neighborhood children and watch passerbys engage in conversation about their pavement art. When my sister and I were young girls we would spend afternoons just drawing with chalk. Other kids would come over and join in. Adults walking by would usually have a compliment or two and sometimes they would just simply smile.
Head to the beach for an afternoon
There you can relax and enjoy while your children play and have fun. Don't forget the essentials such as water or other cool drinks, extra set of clothes for your children, snacks, towels, beach toys, sunscreen, and a blanket.
Have a backyard potluck party
Contact your neighbors and let them know what you have planned. Ask them to bring along a dish of their choice. Be sure to have some actives planned for the children.
Neighborhood scavenger hunt
This is a simple and fun way to get everyone together. Make a list of items for people to collect around a specific area. Include prizes that won't cost much or nothing at all. Some ideas include a free dinner, free night out for parents by offering to babysit, or bake up some yummy treats.
