Now that summer is here you may be thinking of all the activities that you and your family will be able to enjoy. Whether is be a trip to the beach, a picnic, or games of catch you will need to gather up the gear and essentials required. These items have most likely been stored in your garage over some time.
Garages are known to be used as a dumping ground for items you used to use, thought you might use, or didn’t have anywhere else to put.
The following are 10 tips to help you organize your garage this summer.
1. Declutter
Whenever starting any organization project, you’ll want to clear out the clutter first. Take everything out of your garage and sort into piles. Use one pile to place items that you are no longer using or need. You can donate or sell these. In another pile place items that are damaged and no longer usable. You will then be left with the original pile consisting of items to keep.
2. Clean the floor
Grab the trash cans, lawn mower, bikes and everything else you have on the floor and move it out of the garage. Once the floor has been completely cleared out give your garage floor a clean sweep. Then wash.
Figure out exactly what you want to do with your garage and plan your organizational design around those needs. For instance, if you need a place to keep power tools, garage cabinets are a great solution.
4. Invest in a cabinet system
Investing in a good quality storage solution is critical to your success in organizing a garage. Whether it’s a sturdy wall shelf or overhead rack, look for the right shelving to accommodate the weight you need. Cabinets can store everything from tools, sporting gear, and summer essentials. A cabinet system saves space, time, and can be easily customized to your satisfaction.
5. Add shelves
One of the the first things needed to make a garage look better is shelving. You can choose freestanding units made in different heights and widths or shelves that are installed directly onto walls. Shelves are a great place to store cans of paint and bags of potting soil.
6. Be creative
Don't just focus on shelves and cabinets. There are so many additional creative, practical, and exciting ways to store your summer gear. Take advantage of specialized storage solution accessories like baskets, hooks, and slatwall which give an endless array of configurable options. Organize and store everything from hanging baskets, to hooks and mounts for tools or gardening supplies.
7. Make use of vertical space
Use all the vertical space that is available to you, so that you can avoid that pile on the floor. Ceiling space is also available to you, so consider mounting hooks or racks on it.
8. Categorize items
Everything should have an assigned spot. For example, you may designate one area for gardening and yard tools, another area for tools, one for sports equipment and so on.
Keep all your sun essentials in one spot so you can get to the beach or park sooner. Place baskets and hooks at kid-height for storing sunscreen, swim gear, towels and other summer supplies so the whole family can grab and go.
10. Keep regular maintenance
Make it a rule to tidy up the space each time you use it. But all items back to the original location. This should take no more than a few minutes and will save so much time in the long run.
